At this year’s Orange County Fair local artisan, John Simons, took the blue ribbon – 1 st prize for his beautiful pottery. His entry was judged on originality, creativity, workmanship and technique, design, finishing and appearance.
Centuries old pottery from various world-wide cultures have been prized for beauty and workmanship. Today’s historians and archeologists using these artifacts can put together a detailed scope of daily living of the many diverse humankind societies.
Nowadays, pottery is generally considered to be containers made from clay. “Pot” is a term used for any number of container forms. Both words derive from the Old English potian, “to push”. Considering how the potter pushes as they throw the clay onto a wheel, it is easy to see how the process got its name.
